This course prepares individuals to provide personal care and perform basic nursing skills for the elderly and other adults. Emphasis on aging process including mental, social and physical needs of the elderly, patient's rights, nutrition management, elimination procedures, safe environment, restorative services, personal and special care procedures and activities, human body structure and function and related common disease/disorders, communication and documentation, death and dying, and roles of the nursing assistant and health team members. A skill/competency evaluation is required. The course includes class, laboratory and clinical learning experiences. Upon satisfactory completion of the course. Students are eligible to apply the North Carolina Nurse Aide Competency Evaluation for listing as a Nurse Aide I by the N.C. Division of Facility Services, Nurse Aide Registry.

Unit 5 Ethical and Legal Issues
Unit 6 Nutrition and Hydration
Unit 7 Common Diseases and Conditions of Body Systems
Unit 8 The Resident's Environment
Unit 9 Personal Care and Grooming
Unit 10 Basic Nursing Skills
Unit 11 Resident Care Procedures
Unit 12 Palliative Care and Hospice Care
Unit 13 Basic Restorative Services
Unit 14 Prevention of Pressure Ulcers
Unit 15 Restraint Alternatives
Unit 16 Effects of Aging
Learner Outcomes
- Demonstrate mastery over the 16 topics of the curriculum
- Demonstrate professional attitude

- Demonstrate the ability to speak and understand English when receiving or giving directions

Students are responsible for payment of required fees in addition to the published registration fee.
- Textbook and Workbook required to be purchased prior to start of class

Welcome email with Health Forms will be sent to students who meet the requirements for the course as outlined on the Central Piedmont website. Among the requirements are:
- Copy of Social Security Card and Current Drivers License or government issued picture ID
- Medical Physical
- Required Immunizations [according to CDC Adult Immunization recommendations]
- Urine Drug Screening results
- Criminal Background check
- Students must be 18 years of age by the time of clinical
- Proof of high school/GED completion required. Must have official transcripts on file with the college with at least one showing the date you graduated from that institution
This course consists of classroom/lab, online, and clinical hour requirements. Attendance to all class, lab, and clinical meetings is mandatory. Upon successfully completing the Nurse Aide I program individuals are eligible to take the North Carolina Nurse Aide I Competency Test.
