The course reviews general preparation guidelines for the prevention, recognition and proper management of the most commonly occurring medical emergencies in the dental office setting. This course meets the annual requirement for North Carolina public health hygienists to complete six hours of continuing education in medical emergencies. Students will receive a course completion certificate at the end of the in-person course presentation.

B. Top Ten Medical Emergencies (Pathophysiology, Recognition and Management)
1. Vasovagal/Vasodepressor Syncope
2. Postural/Orthostatic Hypotension
3. Hyperventilation
4. Angina/Myocardial Infarction
5. Seizure Disorders/Local Anesthetic Overdose
6. Asthma
7. Allergic Reaction
8. Epinephrine Reaction
9. Diabetes/Hypoglycemic Reaction
Learner Outcomes
Upon completion of this course, the participants should be able to:
- Discuss general preparation guidelines for the prevention and management of medical in the dental office setting.
- Understand the underlying conditions that increase the risk of a medical emergency occurrence in the dental office setting.
- Evaluate the patient medical history and determine the appropriate ASA medical risk category in order to anticipate the potential for emergency situations and proper preventive treatment modifications in the practice of dental hygiene.
- Understand the pathophysiology and recognize the signs and symptoms of the most common medical emergencies in the dental office setting
- Discuss the proper management protocol for the most commonly occurring medical emergencies in the dental office setting Recognize and manage local and systemic complications associated with local anesthesia administration.
