Course Description

This course provides the student with instruction in basic floor, wall, and ceiling framing. The topics covered will include platform floors, cantilevers; wall openings; decking; snap-out; plating; detailing; wood-studding; flat, vaulted, and coffered ceilings; gable rafters; and trusses. In addition, the student will have expanded hand and power tool instruction, along with orientation to the trade, and wood-building fasteners and adhesives. The focus of the course will be the skills necessary to perform basic frame carpentry in a safe and effective manner. The class will utilize the National Center for Construction Education and Research (NCCER) curriculum.

Learner Outcomes

Upon completion of this course, the student will be able to frame floors, walls, ceilings, and simple roofs. They will understand, and be able to demonstrate their ability to frame walls, including layout, snap-out, plating and detailings, along with studding and rough openings. The student will be able to demonstrate how to frame ceilings and simple roofs including: flat and vaulted ceilings; simple gable roofs; and truss settings. All of these skills will be demonstrated in hands-on exercised while demonstrating safe work habits throughout the process. They will also be instructed in the use and application of building fasteners and adhesives.

Notes

Students must wear closed-toe shoes in the construction lab.
