Course Description

This course is designed to empower the investigating Patrol Officer or Detective with the basic knowledge to locate, dust for, and lift potential latent print evidence. Utilizing several recognized means of dusting for latent prints to lift quality prints that can be used for the identification of persons/suspects.
At the completion of this course, you will have the basic knowledge to locate, dust, and lift quality prints to later be examined and used for identification.

Course Outline

Day 1

  • Introductions
  • History of fingerprints
  • What is a fingerprint
  • How are they formed
  • Anatomy of a fingerprint
  • Fingerprint patterns
  • Levels of detail and types of Minutia
  • Basic Point and Shoot fingerprint photography
  • Areas of potential prints (Crime Specific)
  • Types of brushes and uses
  • Types of powders and uses
  • Tapes / Lifter types and techniques
  • Surfaces and processing strategies
  • Exclusion prints
  • Practical application

Day 2

  • DNA considerations
  • Practical application of all powders
  • Practical application instructor brought surfaces (wood, paper, siding, aluminum, etc.)
  • Introduction to ALS and Florescent powders
  • Practical application on student items
  • Final Quiz (not pass or fail, only to gauge knowledge retention)
