This course is designed to introduce the primary responsibilities of a central sterile processing technician. The course includes practical applications of learned concepts and procedures. Topics include preparation, storage, distribution of instruments, supplies and equipment, quality assurance and inventory management. Upon completion, students should be able to apply the principles of sterilization/disinfection in the workplace, as well as the principles of distribution of instruments/supplies/equipment.
Course Outline
This course includes the following topics:Emotional Intelligence, communication, customer service, infection prevention, anatomy, microbiology, medical terminology, regulations and standards, cleaning, disinfection, instrument identification and preparation, sterilization, storage, distribution, quality assurance and inventory management.
Learner Outcomes
At the end of the course, students will be able to:- Demonstrate basic knowledge of medical terminology, anatomy, and microbiology.
- Demonstrate knowledge of infection prevention and standard precautions.
- Do a return demonstration of how to properly don/doff PPE.
- Demonstrate basic knowledge in the areas of decontamination, prep and packing, sterilization, and sterile storage.
- Explain the basics of a quality assurance program.
- Identify common surgical instruments and some complex surgical instruments.
- Effectively communicate and interact with classmates and faculty.
- Create an individual developmental plan in place for future growth.
Notes
9 weeks focusing on theory and hands-on learning in an on-campus lab.
Prerequisites
- 18 years of age by the start of clinical hours
- Must have a high school diploma or equivalent
- Eligible to take ENG 111
- Complete medical records packet (includes mandatory Covid-19 vaccine)
- Proof valid state-issued picture ID
