Course Description

The CHW and LGBTQIA+ Issues class is designed to help community health workers have a better understanding of the LGBTQIA+ community and culture. Information covered in this class includes terms, language, and pronouns, medical issues specific to certain populations in the LGBTQIA community, and how to use affirming LGBTQIA+ care with your clients. This class will cover the LGBTQIA+ spectrum so students can better serve this community.

  

Course Outline

Week One: Review PowerPoints before class Have an understanding of LGBTQIA+ history, culture, and misconceptions

LGBTQIA Brief History o Definitions and Language, Terms Specific to LGBTQIA+, Myths and Misconceptions, LGBTQIA+ Stats,  Discrimination Laws, Review all resources listed, Watch videos related to the topics listed above

Weekly Journal Entry: 200 words What did I learn/How will this assist me in the community

Week Two: Review PowerPoints before class Understand Orientation, Gender, and Gender Identity as well as Coming out. Sexual Orientation vs. Gender vs. Gender Identity vs. Gender Expression, Importance of using Proper Pronouns Process of “Coming Out”, Review all resources listed, Watch videos related to the topics listed above

Weekly Journal Entry: 200 words What did I learn/How will this assist me in the community

Week Three: Review PowerPoints before class Stigma and the LGBTQIA+ Community Mental Health & Substance Use in the LGBTQIA+ Community, Review all resources listed, Watch videos related to the topics listed above

Week Four: Barriers and Social Determinants to LGBTQIA+ Healthcare Common Medical Issues for the following populations: Gender Affirming Assistance,  Lesbians/Bisexual Women, Gay/Bisexual Men, Nonbinary and Transgender, LGBTQIA+ Elders, Effective Communication, Review all resources listed, Watch videos related to the topics listed above

Weekly Journal Entry: 200 words What did I learn/How will this assist me in the community

Week five: Watch Moonlight: This movie is about the struggle and hardships of being gay. The movie is to help us generate empathy for LGBTQIA+ people. Can be found in Brightspace. Be prepared to discuss the movie in class. Questions will be posted to help with discussion and reflection, Review all resources listed, Watch videos related to the topics listed above.
