HEA-HEA8006 - Community Health Workers and Intrapersonal Skills
Course Description
This course introduces the interpersonal and communication skills used in helping relationships and professions. Topics include self-understanding; growth techniques; assertive, passive, and aggressive behaviors; and effective communications in the helping role. Upon completion, students should be able to demonstrate skills for effective communications in helping relationships which promote understanding of self, other people, and personal growth.
Course Outline
- Course includes the book: I Never Knew I Had Choices by Corey.
- This book reviews the various stages of life and transition to help students have a greater understanding of the stages their clients may be in. It also includes chapters on:
- Personal Growth
- Your Body and Well Being
- Autonomy
- Managing stress.
- The class is broken down into discussion groups weekly to discuss the most recently read chapters to assist with processing and gaining insight from other classmates.
- Also each week, the students will complete these two activities through Cengage
- What Am I Learning in Cengage
- Reflection Activity in Cengage.
- As a final project Movie/Book Review Paper: Compose a movie report on one of the course topics. This should be typed, use 12pt. New Times Roman font only double space and be divided into 3 separate labeled sections:
- The basic principles or ideas of the movie (1-2 pages)
- Your evaluation of the movie (1 page)
- Your thoughts on how the book or movie relates to your life. Must provide specific examples (1 page).
- How the book or movie demonstrates a concept or idea from one of your textbook chapters. You must specify which chapter and what concept or idea is discussed (1 page).
- Your report must have a cover page (Title, your name and date)
- Movie Review Presentation: You will present your report to class. Each presentation is limited to ten minutes. You may use power-point, flip charts or hand-outs, etc. Example Outline for Presentation
- Name of movie, course topic
- Basic principle/idea of book or movie
- Evaluation, to include the concept and/or idea that are discussed from the textbook.
Learner Outcomes
Upon completion of this course you will be able to:
- Identify at least 3 personal strengths and 3 weaknesses in relationships with others.
- Describe how value systems are developed.
- Demonstrate how to set behavioral goals.
- Demonstrate the ability to change 2 identified negative behaviors and develop 2 identified positive behaviors.
- Describe Maslow’s Hierarchy of Needs. and Erikson’s stages of development theory.
- List the levels of communication and 8 defense mechanisms.
- Describe self-esteem and identify your own level of self-esteem.
- Explain the difference between passive, assertive and aggressive behavior
Notes
This class will build on the foundational skills learned in HEA 8000. The focus is to help health professionals. Students will look at the different stages of life transitions and discuss and practice effective communication skills.
Method of instruction: Online. This class will be taught through lecture.
